Here is an exclusive interview of a great author of a great book: Amy Botwinick, author of Congratulations on Your Divorce: The Road to Finding Your Happily Ever After.
What is your book, Congratulations on Your Divorce, all about?
It’s a girlfriend’s guide to jump starting a new life after showing the reader how to get through the business of divorce.
The book is divided into two parts:
The Journey- The first chapter talks to a woman and asks her to take an honest look at a decision to leave her marriage if its her choice because the grass may or may not be greener on the other side. The title of the book is very provocative, but that is just to get your attention. I am a big believer in marriage but if divorce is the only option, the book helps a woman move on and do what she has to do. If she decides to leave or she has no choice because she is being the one that is left, the book helps to prepare for the emotional, financial and legal challenges of the legal divorce process.
The Adventure- This part of the book is to help a woman as she transitions into “suddenly single” as she works through her emotional divorce. It helps the reader find ways to work on self esteem and a positive perspective as she creates her new life. This section also covers a chapter on helping children transition as well as chapters involving dating, sex and who prince charming is in the real world.
What makes this book different?
When I was going through my divorce, I remember going to the book store and finding many books on divorce. The problem for me was that they were all written by lawyers, PhDs or therapists with fancy titles after their name. What I was looking for was something written by a regular woman like me who had been there, done that. This book is unique because it’s my story along with many women I interviewed who come from different socio-economic backgrounds and reasons why their marriages broke up. They share their stories and the life lessons they learned to help them move on and find their happiness. The reader will feel like she is sitting down for coffee with a good friend who helps guide her through the process with good information, hope and some much needed comic relief.
Who should read this book?
This book is for the woman who is contemplating her own martial situation. It asks her to take a good look at herself and contributions to the problems in the marriage. It will also give her a good look at what her life might look like if she decides to leave.
This book is for the woman who is dealing with the business of the legal divorce, It will help get her organized and clear in her mind as to what she needs to do to help her get a positive resolution.
This book is for the woman who is done with her actual legal divorce and now needs to work on getting her emotional divorce and the courage to start a new life with a sense of adventure.
When and why did you decide to write this book?
This book started out as my own therapy through journaling to help me with my own “Drama Trauma.” When I started talking to other women about their experience it helped me through some of my own issues. It was then that I realized I could write the book I wished had been there waiting for me on the book shelf when I needed support.
How is it going so far?
The book has been well received and we are going for a nation wide push. We are hoping to get on national television to help empower women and let them know they are not alone.
Tell us a little about yourself.
Im a single mother of two young boys and make my home in Florida working as a chiropractor for the last 14 years. My own divorce experience compelled me to write this book, providing other women with the direct, tell-it-like-it-is advice that I wished had been available to me. I am currently enjoying my “happily ever after” and you can learn more about my mission to empower women through my websites www.womenmovingon.com and www.divorcesextoys.com.
Your book is getting positive reviews, how does that make you feel?
I feel like I am striking a chord with women and really make a difference in their life when they are at their wits end. Knowing that has inspired me to continue my outreach through my websites and newsletter women can sign up for at no charge at www.womenmovingon.com.
Looking back, at what point did you know your book would be a success?
I knew it would be a success because nobody had written a book on divorce with lessons learned by regular women just like them. The beauty of the book is that the reader will be able to identify with at least one woman’s story and learn from that experience and realize she is not alone. That is what makes the book successful.
What is next?
Right now I’m focusing on providing more resources for women as they continue to transition into a new life through radio, television and my website www.womenmovingon.com. My mission is to provide information as well as comfort products in my Divorce Survival Kit that will help nurture a woman’s mind, body and spirit as she creates a new life. I will be hosting a radio show in December, for more details please go to my website and sign up for the newsletter.
If you could give readers one piece of advice, what would it be?
Divorce is hard but it can open the door to a new life if you have the right attitude. Keep your heart open, be strong and stay positive - wonderful things can happen.
Is there anything else we should know? Anything else you would like to share?
Part of my proceeds from my book Congratulations on Your Divorce and my websites go to help victims of domestic violence. On my website www.womenmovingon.com there is a tab on domestic violence that has information and contact numbers to help women find safety and a new life. No woman should ever feel trapped by her circumstance, there is good help out there that can change your life and your children’s for the better, it starts with picking up the phone. Don’t be a victim and do everything in your power to protect the children.
